Clairo dethrones Modest Mouse after just one week at #1

Atlanta native Claire Cottrill, better known as Clairo, dethrones Modest Mouse after just one week on top. She keeps her perfect track record intact as now both her debut and sophomore LPs have topped the NACC 200. The Jack Antonoff co-produced Sling (FADER/Republic) rises 3-1 and follows 2019’s Rostam co-produced Immunity right to the top of the NACC 200 this week. This run makes Clairo one of only 16 artists/bands (and just the seventh solo artist) to top the chart more than once. Fun fact, both Clairo’s aforementioned producer buddies are both on the NACC 200 this week with their own releases.

Three new albums reach the NACC Top 10 this week. We already featured one of them (Torres) recently as our most-added record two weeks ago. She climbs 17-8 this week. The biggest climb into the NACC 200 this week belongs to English singer Yolanda Quartey, who records as Yola. Her debut LP, Walk Through Fire, earned her four Grammy nominations in 2019 including Best New Artist. Her second LP, Stand For Myself (Easy Eye Sound/Concord) races 40-10 on the NACC 200 this week. The album also jumps 5-1 on the NACC Non-Comm Chart giving her her first NACC chart-topper.

Also rising into the NACC 200’s Top 10 this week is Durand Jones & The Indications. The Bloomington, IN five-piece formed in 2012 while several of the band members were attending Indiana University. Their third LP, Private Space (Dead Oceans/Secretly Group), rises 14-9 on the NACC 200 this week. It has also spent the last three weeks atop the NACC R&B/Soul Chart.

Enjoying the highest debut of the week is St. Paul, MN five-piece Hippo Campus. The band was born while its members were attending the Saint Paul Conservatory for Performing Artists. Hippo Campus has kept a steady stream of releases coming since they formed in 2013 with four LPs under their collective belts as well as five EPs, including their latest: Good Dog, Bad Dream (Grand Jury). The EP leads a group of four albums debuting inside the NACC Top 50, opening at #28.

Scoring more Top 10 Adds (43) than any other artist this week is Cameron Lew, who records as Ginger Root. The Huntington Beach, CA singer-songwriter and instrumentalist describes his music as “aggressive elevator soul.” His second EP, City Slicker (Acrophase) also follows seven albums released since just 2017. Lew is joined by two high school friends (Matt Carney & Dylan Hovis) when touring.

English duo Wet Leg takes over the #1 spot on the NACC Singles Chart this week with their buzzy new debut single “Chaise Lounge.” The song rises 3-1 this week. Collecting the most Top 10 adds of any new single adding this week is the Jackson Philips-fronted Day Wave. His first new music of 2021 is “Before We Knew” (one of just four singles to make the NACC 200’s Top 30 Adds of the week).

This week’s top 5 overall NACC Adds, the genre chart-toppers, and the week’s most-added genre records are included below. There are new chart-toppers at NACC Canadian, Jazz, and Electronic this week.
