Topping the NACC 200 this week, Clairo‘s new album Sling, which adds another week to her already lengthy legacy. Will we see another lengthy run like those we’ve already seen recently by Arlo Parks? Only time, and the challenges of new records from Liars (up 14-2), Torres (up 8-3) and Yola (up 10-4), will tell!
Let’s take a look at the greatest gainer this week. That designation belongs to Austin TX’s Alexalone‘s new record ALEXALONEWORLD. A member of Hovvdy and Lomelda’s live bands, the project is the voice of Alex Peterson. Alone no more, this album is their debut as a fully formed 4-piece band and their first for Polyvinyl, climbing up to #56 after a debut at #194 last week and the #2 add. The band will be touring (and presumably seeing Alex do double-duty) alongside Lomelda at the top of 2022, provided we’re all still alive to see such a far-off distant date.
One of two albums breaking through to the Top 10 this week comes from Hiatus Kaiyote. The Australian jazz-funk band was formed 10 years ago in Melbourne. A favorite in the R&B and Hip-Hop worlds, the band’s songs have been sampled by the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, Drake, Beyonce and Jay-Z. Lead singer Nai Palm was even featured on Drake’s Scorpion album when her cover of “More Than a Woman” by Aaliyah appeared at the end of his song, “Is There More?” Their new album, Mood Valiant, is out on Brainfeeder/Ninja Tune and jumps one spot to #10 this week.
Jumping on the chart at #38 is this week’s highest debut, the new album from Lingua Ignota. With album titles like Let the Evil of His Own Lips Cover Him, Caligula and All Bitches Die you’d be forgiven for thinking classically trained multi-instrumentalist made blistering metal music. In fact, she formed a supergroup of sorts called Sightless Pit with Dylan Walker of Full of Hell and Lee Buford of The Body. As Lingua, her experimental music is brutally personal and honest, oftentimes reflecting on her experiences as a survivor of domestic abuse. Their new record, Sinner Get Ready, is out on Sargent House.
Oakland, CA retro-rock band Shannon and the Clams turns up the most-added album this week. In an interesting move, the record, Year of the Spider, is named after one of singer-bassist Shannon Shaw’s most-feared creatures. She said when an astrologer recommended she call upon the 8-armed Hindu goddess Durga when she felt under duress, the symbolism of “getting protection from the thing I feared the most” became too much to ignore. The album was mixed at Dan Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound Studios and released by the label of the same name alongside Concord Records.
Wet Leg extends their stay at the #1 spot on the NACC Singles Chart with “Chaise Longue.” The love for the track has opened doors for the duo and even earned them a shoutout from Simon LeBon on his SiriusXM show. Someone at Domino will have to tell the ladies in Wet Leg exactly who Duran Duran is. Most-added single this week comes from Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats. “Survivor” is the debut single from their new album, The Future, following up the band’s 2018 record and Rateliff’s own solo turn, 2020’s And It’s Still Alright.
