#1 Purple Mountains | The NACC Charts for August 27, 2019

David Berman was no stranger to College and Community radio, having released six LPs between 1994 and 2008 with his band Silver Jews. But it had been over a decade since he’d released any new music. He remedied that this year under a new moniker, Purple Mountains. The self-titled Drag City release debuted on the NACC 200 last month and, sadly, became the first ever NACC #1 to have the artist be alive upon its release and not be when it hit #1. Hopefully it will be the last as well. This week Purple Mountains logs a second week on top.

Only one new album reaches the NACC Top 10 this week. It comes from Glendale, CA quartet, Goon. Began as a solo project by lead singer Kenny Becker in 2013, Goon released two self-produced and self-released EPs. Upon signing to Partisan Records in 2015, Becker filled out the full band and they released another EP in 2018. The band’s proper debut LP, Heaven Is Humming, rises 11-6 this week on the NACC 200.

The ubiquitous King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard return with their second LP of 2019 (a downright lazy pace compared to 2017 when they released five). Infest The Rats’ Nest is the Australian septet’s fifteenth LP since their 2012 debut, 12 Bar Bruise. The album is the highest debut of the week on the NACC 200, leaping aboard at #21. It’s also the highest debut on the NACC Heavy Chart, debuting at #5.

This week’s biggest mover is one we could have easily predicted would show in this spot last week. Katherine Bell, aka Black Belt Eagle Scout, was last week’s most added artist with her Saddle Creek release, At The Party With My Brown Friends (her second LP) and it snuck onto the bottom of the NACC 200 at #188. This week the album soars to #23

Collecting 94 Top 10 adds this week (one of the Top 10 most-added records of 2019) is Melina Mae Duterte, who records as Jay Som. Born in California to Filipino immigrant parents, she notes her parents’ customs and immigrant background as major influences on her music. Her third LP, Anak Ko, follows 2017’s Everybody Works, which, at the time, was featured in our Wednesday Chart Recap when it was the biggest mover into the Top 10, rising 21-7. With 94 Top 10 adds, chances are she’ll be back in the Top 10 very soon.

Los Angeles sister-trio Haim have reached #1 on NACC Singles this week, rising 5-1, with their latest effort “Summer Girl.” There is a three-way tie for most-added single this week. The 1975 are back with “People,” the first song off their 2020 release, Notes On A Conditional Form. Sturgill Simpson returns with “Sing Along,” the lead single from his Sound & Fury LP due out next month. And UK duo Champs have released “Shadow On The Sea,” which previews their September LP, The Hard Interchange.

You can find the Top 5 of the NACC Adds Chart, all of this week’s #1 genre releases, and most-added genre records below. After no new genre #1s last week there are a bunch this week. Hip Hop, Heavy, Folk, Blues, and Jazz all see new chart-toppers.
