#1 (Sandy) Alex G | The NACC Charts for October 15, 2019

There is massive turnover inside the NACC Top 20 this week with seven new entries! (Sandy) Alex G, the artist whose name continues to confound a number of MDs week after week [hint: It’s not Alex G (Sandy)] lands a second week atop the NACC 200. His 8th LP, House Of Sugar is out now on Domino Recording Company. He’ll have his toughest challenge yet reaching a third week on top as the next chart opens. Angel Olsen (36-2), Brittany Howard (5-3), and The New Pornographers (6-4) would all love to push to #1.

Another record in contention for the top spot as soon as next week is last week’s most-added album, Deceiver, from Brooklyn quartet DIIV. Led by Zachary Cole Smith (who got his start in the band Beach Fossils), DIIV, originally called Dive, changed their name in 2012. Their third Captured Tracks LP wastes no time reaching the Top 10 this week, up 71-8. It’s one of three new albums to go Top 10 this week. Metronomy moves 14-10 and the aforementioned Angel Olsen soars 36-2.

The NACC 200’s highest debut this week comes from legendary Australian band Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Ghosteen, their 17th LP since forming in 1983, rockets onto the chart this week at #29. The album is the best-reviewed of 2019 according to Metacritic with an astounding 99/100. Ghosteen is a stark and haunting portrait of loss following the tragic death of Cave’s 15-year-old son in 2015. It’s also the final part of a trilogy of albums that includes Push The Sky Away (2013) and Skeleton Tree (2016).

The album making the biggest climb on the NACC 200 this week (and the only one to climb triple digits) comes from Scranton, PA punk quartet The Menzingers. Formed in 2006, the band is a rare one in retaining all its original members over the course of 13 years and six albums. Their latest, Hello Exile, leaps 196-80 this week.

Back with their 11th LP is perennial college rock favorite, Wilco. Led by Jeff Tweedy (who began the year atop the NACC 200 with his solo release, Warm), the band lands this week’s ‘most-added’ honors with Ode To Joy (out on their own dBpm imprint). The album has been on the NACC 200 for a couple of weeks already and advances 47-20 this week. It just debuted at #1 on both Billboard’s Folk Albums and Independent Albums Charts.

Sophie Allison, aka Soccer Mommy, holds down the top spot on the NACC Singles Chart for a second week with “Lucy.” The week’s most-added single comes from Animal Collective’s Noah Lennox, who records as Panda Bear. “playing the long game” is a new stand-alone single that follows his Buoys LP earlier this year.
