#1 Tacocat | The NACC Charts for May 21, 2019

One of the most exciting aspects of College and Community radio is that you may think you know what will happen on the charts from week-to-week, but there are always surprises. One such surprise takes place this week. After soaring 15-1 last week, Vampire Weekend are vanquished by a band they flew past to reach #1. Tacocat climbed 8-2 last week and this week rise 2-1. The Seattle quartet’s fourth LP, and first for Sub Pop, This Mess Is A Place, becomes the NACC 200’s tenth #1 of 2019. Next week should be fun again. The Mountain Goats, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, and Big Thief are all inside the Top 5 and on the rise. And don’t count Vampire Weekend out either.

Two albums move into the NACC Top 10 this week that weren’t there last week. One of them was there the week before last though. After tumbling 3-11 last week, Jenny Lewis pops back into the Top 10 this week, rising 11-8. The other album climbing into the Top 10 this week (and rising 16-9) comes from Los Angeles band Local Natives. Formed in 2005, the band didn’t release their debut LP until 2009. Ten years later, Local Natives have put out their fourth studio album, Violet Street, out now on Loma Vista Records.

The National are back. The Cincinnati-based quintet formed in 1999 and have eight LPs under their belts, including their latest, the 4AD-released I Am Easy To Find. The band launched their album campaign with a 24-minute short film that accompanied the lead single, “You Had Your Soul With You.” It’s directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Mike Mills and stars actress Alicia Vikander, who also appears on the cover of the album. I Am Easy To Find leaps aboard the NACC 200 this week at #29.

Enjoying the week’s biggest climb is Kansas City-based outfit, The Get Up Kids. The band’s history dates back to 1995 and spans six LPs. Their latest, Problems, is one of four albums this year to climb 160+ spots on the NACC 200, rising 191-31 this week. It’s also the band’s first album in eight years and the second since they re-formed in 2008.

The most-added album this week comes from Welsh singer and producer Cate Le Bon. Most recently, she produced Deerhunter’s NACC Top 5-peaking eighth LP that was released earlier this year. But now she’s back with her own music. Her fifth LP, Reward (Mexican Summer) collects 69 Top 10 Adds and aims to make a splashy NACC 200 debut next week.

Beck‘ remains atop the NACC Singles Chart this week (his fourth week at #1) with “Saw Lightning,” the first taste of his fourteenth LP, Hyperspace, due later this year. Melbourne, Australia’s RVG have returned with their first new music since their 2017 debut LP. “Alexandra” is this week’s most-added single.

You can find the Top 5 of the NACC Adds Chart and all of this week’s #1 genre releases and most-added genre records below. In addition to Tacocat’s rise to #1 on the NACC 200, there is a new chart-topper at Folk as well as a return to #1 at Chill.
