The Avalanches pin down #1 for a third week

Australian-duo The Avalanches convincingly pins down #1 for a third week with their third album, We Will Always Love You (Astralwerks). It will be the only to have occupied the NACC 200 #1 spot for the month of January. The competition for who will land the second #1 of 2021 is heating up though, with Paul McCartney, Viagra Boys, and Slaughter Beach, Dog all lining up behind The Avalanches at #2, #3, and #4.

Three albums reach the NACC Top 10 that were not there last week (though one of them has been in the Top 10 previously). Mayer Hawthorne jumps 21-10, and a former #1 album from Gorillaz rebounds 11-7. But it’s the aforementioned Slaughter Beach, Dog, who makes the biggest climb, jumping 15-4 after debuting on the NACC 200 last week with their fourth LP, At The Moonbase.

Last week’s most-added record, Two Saviors (Keeled Scales), from Big Thief’s Buck Meek, explodes onto the NACC 200 this week at #14, tying Paul McCartney for the highest debut of the young year. Two Saviors is the second solo release from Meek, following his self-titled 2018 release.

South London band Shame enjoys the biggest climb into the NACC Top 50 this week, racing 52-12 with their second LP, Drunk Tank Pink (Dead Oceans). Drunk Tank Pink is an actual color, devised in 1979 in an attempt to make prison cells, psychiatric wards, and yes, drunk tanks more calming. Lead singer Charlie Steen covered the walls of a large closet at home in the bubblegum pink hue as inspiration for the album.

Toronto, ON-based quartet Kiwi Jr. have returned with their second LP, Cooler Returns (Sub Pop). In addition to collecting 74 Top 10 Adds this week and landing one of the Top 5-highest debuts on the NACC 200 this week at #31, the album scores a rare #1 debut on the NACC Canadian Chart.

Austin, TX-based musician Molly Burch debuts right out-of-the-box at #1 on NACC Singles this week with “Emotion” featuring Wild Nothing b/w “Needy” (her cover of the Ariana Grande track). Two bands tie for ‘most-added single’ honors this week: Japanese quartet CHAI with “ACTION” (from their upcoming WINK LP, due May 21) and Scottish quartet Mogwai with “Ritchie Sacramento” (from their upcoming As The Love Continues LP, due February 19).

The NACC Top 5 overall Adds, this week’s genre chart-toppers, and the week’s most-added genre records are included below. In addition to a return to #1 at Latin, there are new chart-toppers at Heavy and that Kiwi Jr. #1 debut at NACC Canadian.
