#1 Soccer Mommy | The NACC Charts for April 3, 2018 are LIVE!

By remaining #1 on the NACC 200 this week, Sophie Allison aka Soccer Mommy joins some elite company. Only St. Vincent, Alvvays, Ty Segall (twice) and Broken Social Scene have reached four weeks on top dating back to the beginning of 2017. And at 20 years old, she’s easily the youngest of that group of artists. Clean, her second album for Fat Possum, is clearly a breakthrough for her and is garnering tons of attention. After successfully fending off Ought for the top spot this week, Soccer Mommy will have to deal with surging records from The Decemberists (5-2) and Yo La Tengo (13-4) next week. For something fun, check out this recent Billboard article that showcases a throwback Spotify playlist of music that Allison says inspired her growing up.

Another artist that may throw a wrench in Soccer Mommy’s chart domination next week could be Frankie Cosmos. As we anticipated might happen based on the number of adds she received, her top-added record from last week storms the Top 10 with a huge 66-5 leap. For lead singer/songwriter Greta Kline, the pressure of building on what she’s done so far was only added to by signing to Sub Pop for this third release. But she also says most of the record was recorded by the time she signed so that helped. In an interview released yesterday by Dork, Kline describes the album, Vessel, as such: “It’s about just being a musician with other people and those kinds of relationships. Depending on people and trusting people, the positive and negative and fears and benefits that go along with having close relationships.” It seems to be a theme that’s connecting with a lot of people.

The NACC 200’s highest debut (#35) this week comes from Damon McMahon, who records under the name Amen Dunes and performs live with two other musicians as a three-piece. McMahon started Amen Dunes in 2006. Freedom is his fifth release under the name. McMahon’s music can be challenging. So much so that his 2013 release, Spolier, was one his label, Sacred Bones, would not release. This new album deals with heavy topics, including a troubled relationship with his father and his mother’s current battle with terminal cancer. Freedom is currently ranked on Metacritic as one of the Top 10 best-reviewed albums of 2018.

Enjoying the biggest climb on the NACC 200 this week (150-53) is Chai, a quartet formed in Nagoya, Japan in 2012 and fronted by identical twin sisters Mana and Kana. Following the release of two EPs (in 2016 and 2017), Burger Records reached out to the band. This LP, Pink, is their first LP as well as their first US release and includes new music as well as select tracks from the previous EPs.

This week’s most-added record comes from Baltimore duo Wye Oak. Andy Stack and Jenn Wesner formed Wye Oak in 2006 under the name Monarch. They released their first album independently in 2007 and signed with Merge in 2008. The label re-released their first album that year and have released each of the band’s five albums since, including their new, The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs. It gathers 113 Top 10 adds this week, 33 more adds than their nearest competitor.
