Broken Social Scene will not be denied! Hug Of Thunder has now logged four weeks at #1 which matches the longest run on top so far this year. (Ty Segall did it in February and March). BSS begin a Fall North American Tour September 15th in Ottawa with dates that extend right into November. Kudos to Arts & Crafts and Pirate for the achievement. Of note this week as well is the Top 4 remaining stationary from last week (a first for this year). One of those records is from Arcade Fire, who wait in the wings at #2 for a second week. They are #1 again this week on the NACC Next & Non-Comm Charts and will challenge BSS again next week for #1 along with Manchester Orchestra and The Districts.
We have two new Top 10 entries this week. One is the aforementioned The Districts (who rise 11-5). But Jen Cloher (a previous highest debut on the NACC 200) rises 17-10 for top honors. The Aussie singer-songwriter will be coming to the US for a string of tour dates later this fall which will culminate with an appearance at Austin City Limits November 11th.
Soaring onto the NACC 200 this week at #18 is one of just a handful of records to debut in the Top 20 this year. That feat belongs to Widowspeak, a Brooklyn-based band releasing their fourth album, Expect The Best. Their entire output has been released on Captured Tracks. Congrats to the label and Terrorbird for the strong debut.
This week’s biggest overall climb belongs to Dent May who leaps 148-22. May, who was born in Jackson, Mississippi, but now calls Los Angeles home, has something in common with Jen Cloher and Widowspeak in that he too is releasing his fourth record.
The battle for the #1 Add this week was a fierce one between The War on Drugs and Oh Sees (formerly Thee Oh Sees). Both records scored over 90 Top 10 Adds but in the end Oh Sees snuck out the win, with 95 Adds. Oh Sees love to change their band name. They’ve done it six times now over their 20-year career. First known as Orinoka Crash Suite, then OCS, Orange County Sound, The Ohsees, The Oh Sees, Thee Oh Sees and now Oh Sees. Orc is the band’s 20th release, which outnumbers the entire output of all the other artists we featured here this week.
