Well that didn’t take long. After debuting at #59 on the NACC 200 two weeks ago, Sophie Allison, aka Soccer Mommy, has raced 59-6-1 to land her first chart-topper at college and community radio and gives us two first-time chart-toppers in a row. The 20-year old singer, who was born in Switzerland but grew up in Nashville, began playing guitar at age 6. Soccer Mommy will be playing this week at SXSW and had landed on a number of ‘artist to see’ lists for the festival including NPR and Brooklyn Vegan.
There are two new albums that reach the NACC Top 10 this week. U.S. Girls is the highest and biggest mover of the pair, climbing 11-6. U.S. Girls is Meghan Remy. She formed the project in 2007 after playing in bands in both Chicago (she grew up in Illinois) and Portland (where she attended college). Remy has resided in Toronto since 2010 and is now a permanent resident of Canada. Her 4AD release, In A Poem Unlimited, is her sixth release. U.S. Girls will also be playing at SXSW this week. Also reaching the Top 10 are indie-pop stalwarts Belle & Sebastian, who climb 14-10.
The NACC 200’s biggest mover this week is a massive one, jumping 160 spots, which looks to be one of the Top 5 climbs we’ve had on the NACC 200. It comes from Melbourne, Australia-based trio Camp Cope. Formed in 2015, Camp Cope are signed to Run For Cover stateside and their sophomore release, How To Socialize & Make Friends, races from 184-24 on the chart this week and is currently ranked as one of the Top 20-best reviewed albums of 2018 so far according to Metacritic.
Our highest debut this week isn’t a particularly high one. In fact, it’s one of the lowest we’ve seen, but it’s still the highest this week at #56 and thus, scores a feature on our re-cap this week nonetheless! It comes from Canadian experimental music and performance art collective, Yamantaka // Sonic Titan. The band’s third album, DIRT, is out now on Paper Bag Records and with a description like this: “They incorporate aspects of Asian C-pop and J-pop, progressive rock, heavy metal, and industrial music as well as Buddhist philosophy and anime,” it’s a fairly certain claim that no one else sounds quite like them.
The week’s top add is San Diego post-hardcore band Hot Snakes. Formed in 1999, the band released three albums before breaking up in 2005. They reformed in 2011, but Jericho Sirens (Sub Pop), their fourth album, is their first since getting back together. Fun fact: band-member John Reis also fronted Rocket From The Crypt for the entirely of that band’s existence (1990-2005).
