Cat Power successfully fends off two more seekers of the #1 crown this week and pins down the top spot on the NACC 200 for a third week with her Domino release, Wanderer. Low and Hippo Campus made a push, but couldn’t seal the deal and both fall away this week. With that, a new crop of albums have moved into contention. Metric rise 4-2, Cloud Nothings advance 7-3, and Kero Kero Bonito leap 11-4 and will all try to challenge for the top next week.
Speaking of Kero Kero Bonito, their 11-4 climb gives them the only new record to reach the NACC Top 10 this week. The London-based trio consists of vocalist Sarah Midori Perry (who goes by the stage name Sarah Bonito) and producers Gus Lobban and Jamie Bulled. The band formed in 2011 when friends Lobban and Bulled were looking for another member for their project. One of their advertisements was posted on MixB, an online bulletin board for Japanese expatriates, due to the pair’s interest in Japanese rap. Perry was one of the first to respond and became a member soon after. They released their first recorded music in 2014. A debut LP in 2016 followed. Their new Polyvinyl release, Time N’ Place, is their sophomore LP.
This week’s biggest climber on the NACC 200 is the chart’s biggest mover ever! After landing the most Top 10 Adds last week and sneaking into the NACC 200 at #190, Ian Sweet skyrockets 177 spots on the chart, landing at #13 with her Hardly Art effort, Crush Crusher. Ian Sweet is Julia Medford. After starting as a solo project and expanding to a trio for Ian Sweet’s debut LP in 2016, Medford has gone back to her roots and released Crush Crusher as a solo project. Black Angels have had biggest-climber bragging rights since April of 2017 when they climbed 174 spots with their Death Song LP.
Soaring onto the NACC 200 this week at #25 is Julia Holter with her eighth studio album, but sixth commercially-released record (and third for Domino Records), entitled Aviary. Holter was born in Milwaukee, WI but moved to Los Angeles with her family when she was six. Her father is a guitarist and once played with Pete Seeger. Holter began playing piano when she was young and began writing her own music when she was 10. Her first recorded music was done in 2011, though was not released commercially. Holter’s new album is the only one to debut inside the Top 40 of the NACC 200 this week.
Amassing the most Top 10 adds since Beach House collected 127 in May, is Dinosaur Jr. lead singer and primary songwriter J. Mascis. His seventh solo record, Elastic Days, out on Sub Pop, collected 108 Top 10 adds this week. Dinosaur Jr. formed in 1984 and have released 11 LPs (their latest being 2016’s Give A Glimpse Of What Yer Not). Mascis first began releasing solo albums with 1996’s Martin + Me. His last solo release came in 2014 with Tied To A Star. Elastic Days, in addition to collecting the most Top 10 adds this week, also hopped aboard the NACC 200 at #151.
Last week’s most added single from Beach House, “Alien” b/w “Lose Your Smile” (outtakes from their NACC 200 chart-topper 7) rises 3-1 on the NACC Singles Chart this week. Australian quartet San Cisco land the week’s most added single with “When I Dream.”
