Alvvays land a second week on top of the NACC 200 this week with their sophomore release, Antisocialites. Lead singer, Molly Rankin is the daughter of John Rankin, the fiddler for acclaimed Celtic folk family collective the Rankin Family, who in the 1990s sold two million records, won six Junos, and were credited with jump-starting a North American renaissance in Celtic music and culture. Her father died tragically in a car accident when Molly was only 12. An accomplished fiddler herself, Molly was turned on to indie rock by her boyfriend and Alvvays bandmate Alec O’Hanley. The rest is history. Alvvays will try to make it three weeks at #1 next week, but will be battling three indie rock veterans for the crown. LCD Soundsystem, Deerhoof and Ariel Pink are lined up at 2, 3 & 4 and have 29 LPs between them. Will experience trump youth? Tune in next week to find out!
With the lone new entry into the Top 10 this week (Mount Kimbie) making the smallest possible climb it could (11-10), and since we’ve already featured them once before, we’ll shine a light on two of the NACC 200’s biggest overall climbers this week. Though, congrats to Mount Kimbie! Reaching the Top 10 is a great accomplishment regardless of how it’s done.
The NACC 200’s two biggest climbers this week come from Moses Sumney (174-29) and The Horrors (192-50). Sumney was born in San Bernadino and growing up was an avid songwriter but was so shy he hid his songs in his mattress. It wasn’t until he moved out of his parent’s house and began studying creative writing at UCLA, that he bought a guitar, taught himself how to play, and began performing. He’s now signed to Jagjaguwar and his debut LP, Aromanticism is off to a rousing start as this week’s biggest climber. Close behind Sumney’s 145-spot leap are English quintet, The Horrors. Their fifth release, aptly titled V, enjoys a 142-spot climb and is one of 2017’s Top 20 best-reviewed albums so far according to Metacritic.
The highest debut of the week comes from Shout Out Louds. The Stockholm-based quintet has released their fifth full-length album, Ease My Mind, on Merge Records. Currently touring Europe, the band will begin a string of US dates October 30th in Philadelphia.
Wolves of all kinds battled for most-added honors this week. Wolf Alice and Chelsea Wolfe gave it the old college try, as it were, but it was Wolf Parade landing firmly at #1 on the Adds Chart this week. Cry Cry Cry is the Montreal band’s first release in seven years. After going on indefinite hiatus in 2011, the band returned to performing and recording in 2016. They are just the second act so far this fall to collect over 100 adds. The other was our current #1, Alvvays.
