#1 Ty Segall : The NACC Charts for February 27, 2018 are LIVE!

Ty Segall leads the NACC 200 for a fourth straight week with his Drag City release, Freedom’s Goblin and matches the month-long run he had on top almost exactly one year ago. He also lifts his NACC 200 #1 week total to eight weeks overall between the two releases. This is Segall’s second double album. If he can remain at #1 next week he’ll have just the third record to reach five weeks at #1 on the NACC 200. His competition will include Anna Burch (3-2), MGMT (7-3) and Palm (8-4).

Last week Superchunk had the NACC 200’s biggest climb and this week they keep that great clip going, racing 15-8 and landing the largest climb into the Top 10 with their 15th Merge Records-released album. As we mentioned here last week, Superchunk are icons in the world of indie rock and their output covers parts of four different decades now. Superchunk has never been a political band, but lead singer and songwriter Mac McCaughan, in an interview with the NY Times said, “It’d be weird to live in the world now and make a record that ignored what was going on.” Superchunk’s album is one of two new records in the top 10 this week. Born Ruffians also climb 12-10.

Boston trio Vundabar enjoy an impressive jump on the NACC 200 this week, racing 189-40 with their third studio album, Smell Smoke. Formed in 2012, the band have packed their new LP, out on Gawk Records, with anthemic garage rock. Vundabar kick off an extensive tour on Friday in New York that has them circling the country, first headed down the East Coast, then over to Austin for SXSW and continuing west, then north and back across the upper United States with a wrap-up date on April 14th in Portland, ME.

The NACC 200’s second-highest debut of the young year comes from Meghan Remy (aka U.S. Girls) who jumps aboard the chart at #21 this week with her sixth studio album, In A Poem Unlimited. The album is her second since signing with 4AD. Remy is orginally from Illinois but relocated to Toronto when she married Canadian musician Slim Twig. Her previous release, 2015’s Half Free was shortlisted for the Polaris Prize. Interestingly enough, having such a lofty debut doesn’t always ensure a run at #1. 2018’s highest debut so far from Spice Boys (#18) stopped at #5 and last year, the two albums to debut inside the NACC Top 10 (from Alt-J and Washed out, peaked at #3 & #4 respectively). U.S. Girls will certainly try to remedy that.

Nabbing the most Top 10 Adds so far this year is Soccer Mommy, the moniker for Nashville-based bedroom pop-musician Sophie Allison. Allison was a freshman in high school when she released Songs From My Bedroom and caught the attention of Orchid Tapes. They released her For Young Hearts in 2016. She signed to Fat Possum and released 2017’s Collection and now has her first proper studio album release with Clean. The Fader recently deemed her “2018’s chillest new rock star” and radio seems to be following suit with 119 stations placing the 20-year old’s album in their Top 10 Adds this week. Already opening at #59 on the NACC 200 this week, expect a possible Top 10 entry next week.

You can see the Top 20 of the NACC 200 below as well as this week’s Top 5 Adds, and all NACC’s #1s. After there being no new #1s last week, this week finds four new chart-toppers at Heavy, Electronic, Folk and New Age.
