The fifth NACC 200 #1 in as many weeks sets two huge records with its 3-1 climb. Ty Segall pushes J. Mascis out of #1 this week and in doing so lands his second NACC 200 chart-topper of 2018 with his In The Red-released covers album, Fudge Sandwich. No other artist has had more than one #1 album in the same year on the NACC 200. The other record Ty Segall sets is landing more #1s overall than any other artist has achieved on the big chart. Segall moves out of a tie with Father John Misty and Cloud Nothings (who both have two #1s) and now holds the title all to himself with three NACC 200 chart-toppers. Segall will try to hold down #1 on the last new chart of 2018 next week. He’ll need to fend off the fast-charging Julian Medford (aka Ian Sweet) though who rises 4-2 this week.
Scoring one of the highest debuts of the year on the NACC 200 this week are Providence, RI quartet Daughters. The band’s fourth LP, You Won’t Get What You Want, explodes onto the chart this week at #14 making it the fourth highest debut of the year behind Lala Lala (9), Beach House (12) and Oh Sees (12). Daughters formed in 2002 but broke up in 2009 after an argument between members. The band re-formed only after a mutual friend told the last two fighting members that each wanted to meet up with the other (even though neither had ever told their friend they wanted to). Daughters have been teasing the recording of this album since 2015. And now, eight years after their third album, the Ipecac release has seen the light of day. Oddly, debuting this high on the NACC 200 is not a strong indicator of an album going to #1. Only one of the four albums that debuted at #14 or higher in 2017 reached the top and only one of the three albums that have debuted higher than Daughters
this year have done so. Daughters will try not to add to that trend.
With no new records in the Top 10 this week, we can shine a light on the top two climbers of the week. The first is Rüfüs Du Sol. The Australian trio has enjoyed huge success back home with their first two LPs debuting at #1 on the Australian Albums Chart and spawned eight straight Top 10 singles on the Australian Indie Chart. Solace, the band’s third LP (out on Reprise) actually debuted two weeks ago on the NACC 200 and dipped 172-195. This week the album more than makes up for that slow start by racing 113 spots up the chart to land at #82. The NACC 200’s second-biggest climb this week comes from 22-year old British musician, Sam Fender. His Polydor EP, Dead Boys, jumps from 189-102. Fender was one of the acts long-listed for BBC’s Sound of 2018 (a list that included Superorganism, Yaeji, Billie Eilish, Khalid, and Sigrid, among others).
The NACC 200’s most-added record this week comes from Canadian quartet, Foxwarren. Led by Andy Shauf (who has been releasing music on his own since 2009), the band is made up of Shauf and childhood friends
Dallas Bryson and brothers Avery and Darryl Kissick. They first started making music a decade ago in the Kissick family farmhouse in Foxwarren, Manitoba. But it’s only more recently that they recorded the music that makes up their self-titled debut LP. Eighty-six stations saw fit to list the album on their Top 10 adds this week, helping it collect almost 25 more adds than the #2 most-added record.
Pushing 3-1 to top the NACC Singles Chart this week is Deerhunter with the first sampling of their upcoming 4AD release, Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared? (due out next month). The continually prolific Guided By Voices have this week’s most added single with “My Angel.” Clocking in at under a minute and a half, the song is the first release from one of two LPs the band plans to release early on in 2019.
