#1 Vampire Weekend | The NACC Charts for May 14, 2019

For the first time ever, the #1 selling album in the country is also simultaneously the #1 album on the NACC 200. Vampire Weekend owns the charts this week, leaping 15-1 on the NACC 200, 20-1 on NACC Non-Comm, and rises 2-1 at NACC NEXT. Their fourth album, Father Of The Bride, sold 138,000 equivalent album units (119,000 of which were album sales) making it the best-selling rock debut of 2019. The album is the fourth this year to jump to #1 from outside the NACC 200, which already tops 2018’s total of three.

Two new albums reach the NACC Top 10 this week and both enjoyed huge climbs to get there. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard advance 42-9 with their 14th album, but it’s Brooklyn quartet Big Thief who enjoy the biggest climb into the Top 10. Their third LP, and first for 4AD, jumps 61-6. Led by Adrianne Lenker, this new LP, U.F.O.F., is one of the Top 10 best-reviewed albums of 2019 according to Metacritic. In fact, three of those Top 10 albums (Weyes Blood and Fontaines DC have the others) are in our current Top 10.

The highest debut on the NACC 200 this week comes from Clifford Ian Simpson, who records under the name Kevin Abstract. Simpson is a founding member of Brockhampton and is part of an increasingly welcome number of out, proud, gay rappers. His third solo LP, Arizona Baby, jumps aboard the NACC 200 at #35, besting two other Top 40-debuting albums from MorMor (38) and Barrie (39).

The NACC 200’s biggest climb this week comes from Mexican duo Rodrigo y Gabriela. Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero met when they were 15 at La Casa de la Cultura where Rodrigo’s brother was the director. The two shared a love of music, especially metal, and soon began releasing music. Mettavolution (out on ATO Records) is their sixth studio album and first in five years. It leaps from 199-47 on the NACC 200 this week and is currently Top 10 on both the NACC World and Latin Charts.

The most-added album of the week is by Brooklyn quartet Charly Bliss. Led by Eva Hendricks, the band formed in 2011 releasing two EPs. Their debut LP, Guppy, was released on Barsuk Records in 2017. And now their sophomore LP, Young Enough, has gathered more Top 10 adds than any other record this week.

Beck‘s “Saw Lightning” enjoys a third straight week at #1 on the NACC Singles Chart this week. His fourteenth LP, Hyperspace, should be released later this year. Silversun Pickups has the most-added single of the week with “Freakazoid,” the second pre-release track from their upcoming fifth LP, Widow’s Weeds, due out June 7.

In addition to Vampire Weekend’s hat trick on the NACC 200, Non-Comm and NEXT Charts, there are new chart-toppers at Jazz, Blues, and Electronic as well as a return to #1 at World.
